Andrew Carpenter is a contemporary furniture designer maker. He originally trained as a yacht and boat builder in Falmouth, Cornwall before working for highly respected boatbuilders on the south coast of Devon. The transition from boatbuilder to furniture designer maker started in the mid 1980's after seeing early furniture designs by Phillip Starck at Mary Fox Linton in London. Inspired to learn more about furniture he studied a furniture degree at Ravensbourne College Of Design and Communication before working as a furniture designer in London.
The furniture is individually handmade and constructed using a mix of techniques borrowed from wooden yacht construction and time honoured furniture making. All the materials start off as raw materials and are carefully chosen for their visual appearance, strength and tactitle qualities. The designs reflect Andrews sailing heritage with the structure of the designs being visually bold, yet retaining a pared down uncluttered aesthetic.
Andrew believes that in addition to lasting a long time, furniture should add individuality and warmth to your room. Therefore they use natural honest materials and don't use synthetic materials. They use wood, leather, wool, linoleum and linen which have a tactile quality that make you feel good, they also wear and age gracefully.
The majority of the furniture is available in bespoke sizes and finished to fit your interior. Please call to discuss your requirements.
